Rake A Difference Day 2012
This year Youth Action Hudson is teaming up with Community Thread to be part of Rake A Difference Day!
Leaf Raking 2011
Our annual community leaf rake was on November 5, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We had 22 students that raked 6 lawns in both Hudson and North Hudson. We offer this service to residents in the area that cannot attend to their own lawns. We are serving our community but we are also serving our environment. Our students learned about their impact on the environment. Removing leaves is vital for the health of lawns. Leaves should not be left to sit on top of the grass because it blocks the sunlight and when the area under fallen leaves stays damp it becomes breeding ground for fungus that can damage the turf. Also leaves that are allowed to get into gutters and then into the storm sewers in town will eventually end up in the St. Croix River. For every pound of phosphorus, the leaves that break apart in the water, 500 pounds of algae is grown and fed in the river. Algae on the surface of the water can take oxygen from the fish and other aquatic plants that use it which depletes life in the river. Our annual leaf rake is one way we teach civic responsibility and link educational components to our program plus we get to get outside and enjoy the fall air!
We would like to thank Fleet Farm for donating leaf bags, County Market for donating 3 dozen doughnuts for our tireless volunteers and Pizza Hut for giving us a hefty discount on pizzas and beverages after we finished that day.
