Guess what?! The last summer month, August is approaching. How many of you were glued to your television sets for the opening of the Olympic Games?! I know we were. The games are so versatile from the Fab Five, to world record breaking in swimming and the near perfect, U.S. shooter. Just so exciting! As hard as it is, Sam and I are going to take a break from the Tuesday night Olympic coverage to enjoy an outdoor concert by Sarah Louise Richards, a Wisconsin native, at Lakefront Park on July 31stat 7 p.m. I remember as a teen I went to Pizza Luce to watch Trampled by Turtles on a very cramped, hole in the wall stage. Being that they are original Duluthians, as am I, I was proud to see their hard work and diligence paying off. And now just this year they made their network television debut. I can say I was there when it started. Wouldn’t you like to do the same! Come on outdoors, relish in the sounds of Sarah Richards, socialize and eat snacks with us!
We would like to do a few more social events like the one above before the school year gets underway. Up and The Goonies are playing in Stillwater on Tuesday, August 14thand August 21st. We can pick one or go to both, a newie and an oldie. What do you think?!
As many of you know we had to postpone our Students Today Leaders Forever Pay It Forward tour this month. BUT the tour is tentatively scheduled for October. We will leave Wednesday afterschool on October 17th and be gone through Sunday, October 21st. On Thursday and Friday the students don’t have school because of parent-teacher conferences. STLF currently has 5 tours slated to go out over that specific break and those buses will be heading to Kansas City, MO. Those tours will be from St. Paul Public Schools, Minnetonka, Wayzata, Edina, and Eden Prairie in MN. STLF is confident that having a celebration city where there are multiple buses is one of the best experiences of the tour. You get to meet students from different states and hear from them directly about their experience on the tour and different places they volunteered. It creates a great sense of community amongst STLF.
With the tour being postponed there is more time to fundraise. We have two grocery bagging days set at Family Fresh on August 23rd from 3:15 p.m. to 8 p.m. and September 20th from 3:15 p.m. to 8 p.m.
YAH will be working during Pepperfest, Friday, August 17th through Sunday, August 19that the pizza food booth. This fundraiser will be shared with Destination Imagination and Knights of Columbus to support programming fees. Sam will be sending out a spreadsheet with the available shifts. If you would like to work email Sam the day and time you will be there.
