How many of you have completed a 5k? A 5k is approximately 3.1 miles, usually completed in less than 30 minutes. Not too bad. Doable. BUT what if you had to complete and successfully finish a 5k every single day with, may I add, 20 liters of water. Could you do it?
In developing countries women and girls do just that. Three
miles is the average distance they walk every day for water. We all know that water drives nearly every aspect of human activity. Right now regions are suffering from water scarcity. There are 884 million people who lack access to clean drinking water and over 2 billion who lack access to an adequate latrine.
What will you do about it?
Youth Action Hudson is teaming up with Camp St. Croix for The Water Walk 5k as a part of the Earth Day Celebration, next Sunday, April 29th at noon!
For those of you asking, "just what is a water walk?"--let us tell you. A Walk for Water is a fundraising and awareness campaign where participants will complete a 5k carrying approximately SIX LITERS OF WATER!
All funds raised will support a WASH project (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) at the Nyonjoro Primary school located in the Nyandarua District in Kenya. You don't need to bring or raise money to do the Water Walk! If you would like to donate you can; but, you aren't required to. Please come out and support the cause! Feel free to bring friends and family, as there will be a lot of events going on!
**Please bring three 2L pop bottles with you. Gallon milk jugs also work well. We highly suggest also bringing a backpack to carry the bottles in. It takes a long time to fill up three bottles; we also suggest you fill the bottles before you come to the event.**
**If you do not want to walk the 5K, but still want to support this event, please come as we will need several volunteers that day!**
Remember to check out our YAH Facebook Page about the event too! If you or someone you know would like to learn more about H2O for Life, and what's going on in other communities, click on the link!
