We then made our way to the University of Minnesota - Duluth campus where students had the opportunity to hear from an admissions counselor and take a full campus tour! We also had a surprise visit from past Youth Engagement Coordinator, Elise Whaley, who originally established YAH's partnership with STLF.
From Duluth we traveled to Bayfield, WI, where we got the opportunity to explore the town and take in the beautiful shoreline. We stayed in the town hall and spent the evening taking part in a trust walk and guided meditation. The next day we headed to Mt. Ashwabay Ski and Recreation, where we helped stack firewood to prepare for ski season, as well as clean up the surrounding area that is used for festivals during the summer months.
From Mt. Ashwabay, we traveled to the Porcupine Mountains where we spent time exploring the area and enjoying the beautiful view!
Our next stop was Houghton, MI where we had an opportunity to explore the downtown area. We spent our evening at a church just outside of downtown. The next morning we traveled to Little Brothers of the Elderly, where we helped sort and stack wood that would be brought to elderly individuals who would not otherwise have it for their wood burning furnaces. Students also helped with general landscape maintenance.
During our time in Houghton, students interested in engineering had the opportunity to visit the Michigan Tech University before starting the service project.
After spending our evening in Marquette, MI, we returned to Houghton where we celebrated all that we had accomplished during the tour and enjoyed some much deserved relaxation! Students also had the opportunity to write letters to themselves to remind them about their experience on the tour and what they wanted to take away from the experience.
Once again, the youth of the Hudson community have shown their dedication and enthusiasm for creating positive change and continue to be an inspiration to all those around them. I am so impressed with everything our HHS youth did on this tour, and am even more impressed with how they continue to pay it forward in their community every single day.
None of this would have been possible with the amazing team at Students Today Leaders Forever, our college core leaders, and all the locations we served at. A huge thank you to parents and families of the youth who supported their decision to go on the tour. And last, but certainly not least, the 40 amazing, incredible students: Mattie Baumann, Caitlan Blomker, Sam Chase, Samantha Drost, Rosa Dunn, Alexis Gagne, Camille Gannon, Kelsey Geigle, Rita Haney, Jackson Hellmers, Lauren Holmberg, Parker Holum, Samuel Johnson, Kate Knott, Shayla Koeckeritz, Ashley Lardy, Jonah Mahowald, Brianna Manke, Alexa Marlow, Jacob Midby, Andrew Midby, Lauren Milbrandt, Madison Miller, Marina Minic, Emily Plattner, Sarah Potter, Grace Potter, Mitch Rasmussen, Hana Saifullah, Abigail Smith, Lucy Stiles, Callie Thielke, Lindsay Tvedt, Clare Weber, Deena Whitwam, Curtis Whitwam, Caroline Witchell, Pete Zindler and Neve Pechacek.
