Sophomore Sydney Rossini created the Period Project as a way to provide comfort, cleanliness and dignity to homeless women by providing feminine hygiene items such as pads and tampons in hand sewn bags.
The project is designed to raise awareness of the issues that are facing homeless women. Resources such as shelters and food banks are often well publicized and accessible, but what happens when a woman is in need of basic feminine hygiene items? The fact that the topic is seen as taboo, coupled with the high price for these items means many shelters are unable to provide these items to women.
Sydney and fellow YAH volunteers made and packed more than 70 bags with pads, tampons and candy. These bags will be distributed through homeless shelters, such as Grace Place, resource centers such as Operation HELP, and outreach organizations throughout the area.
