Over the past few months, Youth Action Hudson and the Hudson YMCA have partnered up to combine our two leadership groups. Youth Action Hudson's Youth Advisory Board and the YMCA's Leaders Club have been meeting on Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30 at the Hudson YMCA to participate in teambuilding, leadership training, and service projects.
Last month our youth volunteers had the opportunity to apply for a grant from the St. Croix Valley Master Gardeners Association. Our students applied for and received $250 to help revitalize the garden that is located in the skate park at the Hudson YMCA. Juniors Jack Johnson and Graham Fisher designed a new garden layout and plans for a new rainwater capture system.
Last week, our youth volunteers started the gardening process by planting seeds in starter kits. Our youth will be growing onions, potatoes, watermelon, peppers, tomatoes, basil, cilantro and so much more! While the seeds are germinating, preschoolers at the Hudson YMCA will help water and tend to the growing plants!
This week, our volunteers spent their Tuesday afternoon starting the process of cleaning up the garden! There is plenty of work to do before we can start building the new raised beds, but it's exciting to see the transformation! Produce grown in the garden will be sold at farmers markets and all proceeds will go back to youth programming and continuing the partnership between the Hudson YMCA and Youth Action Hudson. So be on the look out for more information about upcoming farmers markets and come buy some fresh produce from these hardworking Hudson youth!!
