                                    PeaceJam

_ Youth Action Hudson's goal with PeaceJam was and still is to connect students with Noble Peace Prize Laureates to inspire change. PeaceJam was founded in 1993 by Dawn Engle and Ivan Suvanjieff. They wanted to inspire young people to use their energy to work for positive change. The Dalai Lama suggested they involve other Nobel Peace Laureates so young people could study their lives and get many different perspectives on the world.

                                    Upper Midwest PeaceJam Slam

On October 15, 2011, 11 students attended PeaceJam Slam at William Mitchel College of Law in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The event featured keynote speaker Suzanne Koepplinger, Executive Director of the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center. Youth and their mentors gained the knowledge and resources they need to start to improve their communities and the world by participating in workshops, comprised of:

Youth Solutions: exploring the achievement gap , its many factors, and how youth are taking action; Youth Taking Action through Service-Learning:  tips for navigating students through projects, and highlight future opportunities to be a stronger leader; Youth Voice through Creative Expression: a focus on how performing and visual arts can foster the development of self-confidence and leadership skills.

These are just a few youth-directed leadership and learning opportunities. However, other workshops incorporate an educational outlook on a global scale, expanding our youths' world, many of which include:

Know Your Rights in School: introducing students to their rights and to critically question their rights and perceived lack of rights in schools; Child Soldiers: learn about the exploitation of children in conflicts and how to advocate for laws to prevent child soldiers and for ways to prosecute people who perpetrate child soldiery; Environmental Degradation and Political Motivated Violence: a close look at how natural disasters and environmental degradation, such as deforestation, are linked to conflict.

Since October, YAH students have been studying the extensive PeaceJam curriculum on Tuesday's either after school or in the evenings. Contact YAH for more information. We will be holding a introduction to PeaceJam on January 17, 2012 in the YAH community room.

On April 11-14, 2012, youthrive and NYLC will cohost the 23rd Annual National Service-Learning Conference and youthrive PeaceJam Youth Conference.
